While breast augmentation is a popular plastic surgery procedure, there are many misconceptions related to the surgery. If you’re interested in breast augmentation, here are some things we think you should know.
1. There are different types of breast implants.
Saline breast implants are the most preferred breast augmentation option, as they are FDA-approved for women age 18 or older. These implants are filled with sterile salt water and provide constant firmness, feel and shape.
Silicone breast implants feel the most like natural breast tissue and are filled with silicone gel. When choosing silicone breast implants, keep in mind that you may have to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to ensure your implants are functioning properly. These implants are FDA-approved for women age 22 or older.
There are several other types of implants such as gummy bear, round, smooth and textured. However, the experts at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Associates highly recommend saline or silicone breast implants.
2. Breast augmentation requires recovery time.
Like any major plastic surgery procedure, you must plan for recovery time. After breast enlargement, it is recommended to take at least one week off work. For that week, it is normal to feel tired and sore, but you may be prescribed medication to help control any discomfort. Swelling will slowly start to diminish a few weeks after surgery.
3. Anesthesia is required during surgery.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under intravenous anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep for the entire procedure time of about two hours. While anesthesia is something most patients are okay with, there are others who may not be able to be put under for other health-related reasons.
4. There’s a minimal chance of your breast implants leaking.
Don’t worry—though there is a chance of this happening, most patients do not experience any problems. Breast implants are specifically designed to handle this so that you are not in any danger.
Since saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, this solution doesn’t harm you. If these implants have a leak, the saline is safely absorbed by your body and eliminated through natural processes. When silicone breast implants leak, the gel remains in the implant’s shell or spreads to the breast implant pocket. Both scenarios are safe and will not have a negative effect on your body.
5. Your desired results will take time.
After a plastic surgery procedure, it is normal to be concerned with what is first seen. Breast augmentation is an in-depth procedure, so the healing process will take quite some time. This involves discomfort, swelling and possible bruising, all of which will not be an issue a few weeks after surgery. Stay calm during this process, and remind yourself that you will see your results once your body has completely healed itself.
