Most people get too comfortable with their typical skin care routine, never considering a switch up or change. What these people don’t know is that your skin care routine should change slightly each season! We’ve got a few tips on how you can take care of your skin during the summer months.
1. Always. Wear. SPF.
You wake up one summer morning, and the sun is hiding behind a sky of clouds. There’s no need for SPF, right?
Sunny or not, you should always be wearing SPF. Harmful UV rays beam right through cloudy skies, putting your skin at risk. Wearing SPF is important year-round, but it’s vital during the summer season. On days that the sun actually is out, make sure you’re even more protected by using a higher level SPF and reapplying as directed.
Your lips are important when it comes to summer skin care, too! For days on the beach, pack a lip balm with SPF. Sun exposure can have a negative effect on this sensitive skin.
2. Don’t Forget To Moisturize!
Even though you’re sweating more frequently during the summer months, you shouldn’t hold out on moisturizer. Wash away the oiliness and sweat, then apply a moisturizer of your choice for hydration. This step should be included in your summer skin care routine no matter what time of day! For morning cleansing, you can choose a moisturizer that already contains SPF to save yourself the extra step.
3. Stop Laying Out!
Who doesn’t enjoy lounging by the pool with a good book? Unfortunately, exposing your skin to the sun for extended periods of time is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. Just being in the sun for more than ten minutes, protected or not, increases your chance of acquiring skin cancer tremendously. The same can be said for those who use a tanning bed, which is equally as dangerous due to ultraviolet radiation. It doesn’t matter how you got it—tan skin is damaged skin.
To achieve a sun-kissed look without the damage, try a self-tanner instead! There are a variety of products on the market that are easy to apply, leaving you with a safe and natural-looking tan.
4. Exfoliate Your Skin!
Exfoliation is extremely important in getting rid of dead skin and other impurities—and it’s even more important during the summer! With warmer weather comes an increase in sweating, and that can leave bacteria sitting around on your skin. But when you exfoliate, you’re scrubbing away dirt and other impurities that can have a negative effect on your skin.
Plus, if you’re one who enjoys a bronze glow during the summer months, exfoliation makes self-tanner application much more effective. Your tanning product will be fully absorbed and more noticeable rather than if it was going to waste on dead skin cells.
5. Drink Enough H20!
With so many fun summer activities, it’s important to remember to drink enough water. Dehydration has a huge effect on the condition of your skin and how your body functions. Not drinking enough water can decrease blood flow, give your skin a dull appearance, and even cause wrinkles and acne.
Aim for eight to 10 eight-ounce servings of water throughout the day. You won’t notice this change immediately, but the long-term effects are extremely beneficial to summer skin care—and beyond!
